It’s human skills – not technical skills – that we need the most in today’s work force (Special to The Globe and Mail, by Scott Stirrett, August 08, 2017 updated August 11, 2017) In this article, Stirrett speaks of the skills needed in this our fourth industrial revolution. It is predicted that 42% of jobs will be lost due to automation and to succeed in our chosen careers, we will require swift adaptation to the rapid change. Yes, STEM is vital and needs to be the norm, but human skills (commonly referred to as 'soft skills' or 'social skills') must also be stressed.

In the article, Stirrett points out, that "in 2016, the World Economic Forum published an extensive report called The Future of Jobs. One of the report’s main findings is that “social skills – such as persuasion, emotional intelligence and teaching others – will be in higher demand across industries.”" One person can no longer have all the answers. Understanding the educational disciplines does not mean that you can communicate them to others or come up with all the strategies on your own. Success, personal and professional, requires the ability to collaborate and work with others in an emotionally mature and empathetic manner. Bullying and bossing will not work in complicated and team environments. As Stirrett puts it, "Understanding people, including ourselves, is one of the most challenging aspects of life. As our world becomes even more complex and the structure of work evolves significantly, Canadians must focus more than ever on sharpening these human talents."
